About Evelyn's Taistings
In Oxford I was the only member of the graduate committee who wasn't tea-total, so I ended up being responsible for buying in the wine for graduate dinners that happened once a week (I know, tough job!). It was then my interest in wine really took-off. I put together a wine list for the dinners and was prompted to lead a couple of wine tastings, after it became clear that the graduates would prefer to know a bit more about affordable, readily available wines, rather than high-end wines that were far outside any student budget.
When I came to Aberdeen I adopted the same philosophy for the Young Adults' Charity Wine Tastings
at Queen's Cross Church, which have been going now since March 1999. These tastings are particularly informal and fun and the participants are always "young" even if the age range spans several generations. It's a great way of meeting new people and getting to know others better.
Now I use the same, down-to-earth approach to bring wine appreciation to everyone. I've lead corporate tastings for The Society of Advocates in Aberdeen, staff and friends of Talisman Energy (UK) Ltd and Deloitte, as well as house-parties all over Scotland and a hen party on the west coast of Ireland. I've also used the wines from a client's own cellar to guide their guests through the delights of southern Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, after an in-depth, consultation process
I passed my Intermediate Certificate from the Wines & Spirits
Educational Trust (WSET
) with distinction in May 2009 and I'm now studying hard for my Advanced Certificate.
One final note of caution, be adventurous in what you drink, not how much. Please drink responsibly.
